Türkiye
Vıbes
Türkiye (officially the Republic of Türkiye) is a transcontinental country located mainly on the Anatolian Peninsula in Western Asia, with a smaller portion on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe.

Largest City: Istanbul (a historic city that straddles Europe and Asia)
Official Name Change: In 2022, the United Nations formally recognized the country's name change from "Turkey" to "Türkiye" (pronounced tur-key-yay), as requested by the government. This was done to disassociate the country's name from the bird and the negative connotations of "turkey" in English (e.g., "a stupid person" or "a failure").
Türkiye: A nation bridging Europe and Asia, now officially known by this name.
Turkey: A large bird native to North America, central to Thanksgiving dinners.
The Connection: A historical naming error from the 16th century.
The New World: When Spanish explorers arrived in the Americas, they found the similar-looking (to them) turkey and mistakenly thought it was the same bird.
Culture: A unique blend of Eastern and Western traditions, known for its cuisine, carpets, coffee, and historical sites.
Rich History: Home to ancient civilizations like the Hittites, classical cities like Ephesus, and formerly the heart of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.
Origin: Despite the name, the bird is not from the country of Türkiye. The naming confusion is historical. When Europeans first encountered the bird in the Americas, they incorrectly identified it as a type of guinea fowl that was imported to Europe through Turkish merchants. So, the bird became known as a "Turkey bird" or eventually just "turkey."
Species: There are two main species: the Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) of North America and the Ocellated Turkey (Meleagris ocellata*) of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico.

Why the Same Name? (The Historical Mix-Up)
Guinea Fowl: A bird native to East Africa was imported to Europe by merchants from the Ottoman Empire (centered in modern-day Türkiye). Europeans called these birds "Turkey fowls" or "Turkey birds" because the merchants were "Turkish."
